Sumeru was designed with the intention of supporting our local craftsmen from the local community as well as keeping our carbon footprint as low as possible. Many of our construction materials were locally sourced and our decor such as bronze works and bovine hide carvings were crafted by local Siem Reap artists and crafts-men as well as nearby Kampong thom Province. The design of the structure was inspired by the local type of housing in Cambodia known as the ?tube house?, the main characteristics of which are long and narrow. To take advantage of our tropical climate we incorporated passive cooling and allow for all the main arterial routes to be exposed to the open air which in turn allows cross breezes to cool the interiors. The high ceiling of the lobby follows the same function, which is to allow hot air to rise while keeping the lower level of the room cool.
